Anxiety

Over the past several years, anxiety related disorders have become the most reported and treated mental health issues in the country. Left untreated, anxiety can become a chronic issue leading to panic attacks, constant stress and difficulty focusing. I take a two pronged approach to treating anxiety. I work with clients to help them understand and manage the physiological impacts of stress, while simultaneously working to help the client understand and adjust the specific belief systems that have lead to the current levels of discomfort. While most people will never be able to completely rid themselves of anxiety, we can find ways to manage it and use it to your benefit, rather than continuing to allow it to hold you back.

Depression

Depression is a common mental health struggle, with over 20 million Americans impacted by major depression, and even more struggling with depressive symptoms. Suffering with depression can feel overwhelming, especially as it impacts your relationship with yourself and with others. My approach to depression is to help each individual client understand the origins of their symptoms, while also working on new behaviors that can help bring a sense of joy back to your life. Getting control of your depressive symptoms can often be a long-term battle. I see it as my role to offer support, accountability and help with breaking negative patterns of thinking that lead to individuals to feeling stuck or unable to change their circumstances.

Relationship issues

Relationships, especially with those closest to us, can often be made more difficult by negative thought and belief patterns. I am not a couple’s therapist and cannot fix what’s wrong in your relationships. However, I can work with you to help you show up as a better partner, friend, parent, or child. Improving a relationship almost always hinges on the way each party communicates with the other. I can work with you to improve your relationships by challenging your current communication patterns and helping you to better understand your needs and how to get those needs met. Our work on relationships will include working toward a better understanding of yourself such that you can see how negative cycles are playing out in your relationships. This work can help empower you to make the changes necessary to overcome these cycles.

High-stress careers

As a former attorney, I am no stranger to the demands that high stress careers can place on an individual. I work with attorneys, doctors, engineers, consultants, bankers, and a variety of other professionals that experience high levels of stress in their daily lives. My approach is to help clients identify and treat common issues experienced by individuals in high stress careers, including perfectionism, insomnia, relationship issues, substance abuse, workaholism, anxiety and impostor syndrome. Together, we will work on prioritizing your essential needs, addressing issues related to self-esteem and improving efficiency so that you can experience a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Workplace conflict

Whether you are working an hourly job in the service industry or earning a salary at a Fortune 500 company, workplace conflict is inevitable. Our work around conflict can help you to identify your role in the conflict, while also taking a closer look at how personality dynamics might be contributing to the situation. We will work through anger or whatever other reactions you might be having to the conflict, while working towards nuanced solutions and approaches to resolving the conflict. We will work on empathy and communication to prevent these disagreements from negatively impacting your career.

Motivation

Issues with motivation often stem from depressive symptoms, but can often be even more complex, going back to the way your parents or teachers attempted to motivate you earlier in life. Whatever, the reason, many individuals experience periods of time where they struggle with motivation, procrastination or flat-out avoidance of what they need to do. While we can work through these blocks, I often teach discipline in conjunction with motivation. Motivation is inherently fleeting, so if we can build discipline, we can continue to perform well regardless of whether we can access our motivation on any given day. Discipline, in this sense, can lead to greater feelings of freedom, reduced anxiety and higher levels of self-esteem. I am happy to work with individuals to identify and tap into motivation, but I feel strongly that motivation in addition to discipline is what most of us truly need to be the best and most efficient versions of ourselves.

Anger management

Anger and frustration are emotions that we all feel at some point or another. However, chronic anger can ruin a marriage, a career or even land an individual in legal trouble. Anger is the emotion we use to cover up more vulnerable negative emotions. For most people it is easier to express anger than it is to express pain or sadness. As a result, this emotion becomes the default when things aren’t going well. It is addictive and it has no real resolution. In our treatment of anger, individuals will learn tactics to slow down when angry feelings are rising to the surface. We will then work on strategies to tap into the underlying emotions and diffuse angry outbursts before they begin, leading to improved communication skills and higher levels of self-worth.

Parenting

Parenting is hard. Being a parent can simultaneously be one of the most rewarding and most difficult relationships an individual will ever experience. Mothers and fathers are constantly subjected to the opinions of others about how they should behave as parents, making a stressful job even more difficult. Parents often experience feelings of shame, self-doubt,  anxiety and fear of judgment around how they show up as parents. Our work around parenting will focus on maintaining as healthy of a balance as possible, while also recognizing the immense amount of work each individual is tasked with as a parent. We will process feelings associated with parenting, while also working toward strategies that work for the individual, creating a tailored approach to this nuanced role.
